It's easy to write 2011 off as the best year of gaming yet (or bitterly complain about how everything has gone downhill, if you're that sort of person), but never fear! 2012 is here, and it's bringing with it a metric ton of games. Here's fifty of the best that 2012 has to offer, from A (Aliens: Colonial Marines) to X (XCOM).
The bitter disappoinment of AVP still lingering in our mouths, Gearbox's take on the xenomorphic franchise with Aliens: Colonial Marines is promising some old-school, claustrophobic corridor horror. Play with your friends, and watch them get eaten alive before you!

Will 2012 be the year that we finally, finally see Beyond Good & Evil 2 released? All sources point to "maybe", with still no firm release date but strong messages from the developers that they are definitely working on it. If it does come out this year it'll doubtless be in the blockbuster pre-Christmas period, so keep your excitement levels simmering until then.

It's time to return once again to Ken Levine's world, with Bioshock Infinite taking place over the skies of Columbia in a city powered by hot air. With an outlandishly bright aesthetic and architectural style, Infinite is definitely set to shake up the Bioshock formula.

The game that will almost certainly never make it into Australia, Carmageddon: Reincarnation has nevertheless already made it into our hearts as a game to bring back the sheer joy of repeatedly running people over and then causing large explosions. Despite that, we don't actually know very much about the game other than the developers would like to release it this year, so let's hope more information will be forthcoming soon.

A real out-of-left field announcement for Valve last year: when we were all expecting Half-Life 3, they went and told us they'd be revamping their crowd favourite team-based shooter as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Due out later this year and currently in beta, the game is essentially a polish and reskin of the Source version with a few more bells and whistles.

It's the sequel we all knew was coming: Darksiders 2 puts us in the shoes of Death rather than War, and tasks us with killing a whole bunch of enemies in a hugely stylistic fashion. There's probably more to it than that but hell, have you seen that scythe?

Finally happening in 2012, Diablo III will launch and sweep away what little already remains of our precious free time. I'm pretty much going to end this paragraph here, because who doesn't already know what Diablo is? Read more of our hands-on impressions here and here.

From ubiquitous franchises to fresh new blood, Dishonored is one of the single most fascinating sounding games to launch in 2012. Billed as a Deus Ex style FPS-sandbox-RPG-sort-of-thing, the game promises huge amounts of wacky powers and flexibility in solving your missions. From possessing bodies to stopping time, Dishonored may not be able to spell its name correctly but it sure seems like they've got their finger on the pulse of what makes gaming fun.

Rounding out Valve's portfolio of "Things That Still Aren't Half-Life 3" is DotA 2, a remake of the classic formula spawned from the Warcraft III map of the same name. Early reports are fairly positive, although there's still supposedly a fair number of kinks waiting to be ironed out. Read our hands-on-impressions here.

Cryptic and Atari are teaming up to give us Dungeons & Dragons: Neverwinter this year, a fourth-edition take on the classic city that has provided so much roleplaying goodness over the years. As a massive D&D fan I'm fairly excited, but doubly so because of Cryptic's promise to provide toolkits for our own content creation. Very promising.

CCP, moving into the world of PS3-exclusive console shooters? Seems like that's the case, with DUST 514 showing everybody that CCP are about more than spaceships and controversies. The game promises to link up to the EVE universe in real time, which - if it works - should provide for some amazing battles.

Returning once again to the familiar jungle setting, Far Cry 3 is looking to continue the grand tradition of sprawling open wilderness and men with guns who want to kill you. What more could you want?

2012 is the year that FF fans either rejoice or groan as Final Fantasy XIII-2 finally launches, aiming to "exceed Final Fantasy XIII in every aspect" with "a brand new storyline".

A thoroughly bizarre premise that nevertheless sounds like amazing fun, Gotham City Impostors puts you in the shoes of vigilantes or villains dressed up as poor imitations of Batman and the Joker respectively, and then asks you to shoot each other to death. Delightfully wacky.

One of the biggest names of 2012, Rockster's Grand Theft Auto V is set to repeat history again: look forward to the half-a-dozen controversies and media outrages, the threatened boycotts, and then eventually the huge success of the game regardless. Cynical? Me?

Finally launching in 2012 is Guild Wars 2, the MMO that released a powerful manifesto in which they promised to get rid of grind, to give your character their own personal storyline, and to change the way you think about MMORPG's. Will they succeed? We'll be there in launch day to find out!

Sadly this is just speculation, but the indie-developed and fantastic-looking mech battle simulator Hawken should be ready for release in 2012. Between that and Mechwarrior Online, it's very exciting times for fans of big robots everywhere.

The next game in the series and one that promises to change everything, Hitman: Absolution looks somewhat to be following the route established by Splinter Cell: Conviction and turning into a game where murdering everyone is very important. Whether it will still deliver on the series signature stealth action however, is yet to be seen.

Wandering the blasted urban skeleton of a deserted Chicago, trying to survive and figure out exactly what happened to make it that way? That's I Am Alive, and it looks like a game perfectly set to cater for the Explorer Bartle Types among you. Such as me, I guess.

Another tentative release date of 2012, but one that's worth mentioning: Infinity: The Quest for Earth is a procedurally-generated space MMO that allows you to travel from space into a planet in real time, with no loading screens, and explore the planet as if it was actually the size of a real planet. The team behind this is quite small but the technology is very impressive, although whether they can turn it into a game in time for a 2012 release remains to be seen.

A particularly favourite of our man Toby's, Inversion is an FPS with a twist: gravity. Specifically, the ability to control and manipulate it or to have such manipulations inflicted upon you. Check out the live action trailer, it's quite delightful!

Another one to unfortunately file away in the PS3-exclusive basket, Journey puts you in the shoes of a character wandering across a vast desert, trying to reach the mountain on the other side. Along the way you'll meet other players trying to do the same thing, but you can't speak with them or communicate in any way. What does it all mean? What mysteries will you uncover?

With Todd Macfarlane, R.A. Salvatore and Ken Rolson on board, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a star-studded cast of an RPG that fair blew the socks off our own Bane Williams who recently went hands-on with the game in Sydney. New IP's always have a tough time of it, and EA has a lot riding on Amalur's successful launch this year. We'll bring you all the details when we can.

Probably one of - if not the - biggest names to come out this year, Mass Effect 3 signs off the trilogy of space opera epics from Bioware in what looks like gritty style. With a Reaper invasion of Earth underway and Commander Shepard up before a court martial, the stage is set for a powerful conclusion to the series that promises even more of the hard decisions that make the games so memorable. There's apparently also some multiplayer nonsense as well, but as far as single-player story-driven games of the year go, this is definitely the one to watch.

Max Payne returns, and he's... older, balder and fatter. Sounds like my kind of hero, quite frankly! In Max Payne 3, control of the series has been passed to Rockstar games and Max now finds himself in São Paulo, Brazil, eight years after the events of Max Payne 2. Bullet time makes a return, and a new "Last Man Standing" mechanic allows Max to avoid death by killing the person who shot the killing blow at him. Stay tuned for more!

The Mechwarrior franchise makes a return in F2P form in 2012 (as is the fashion), with Mechwarrior Online. Developed by Piranha Games, the mech combat simulator will use CryEngine 3 technology and, although we're yet to see any actual in-game shots, the mock ups have perfectly captured that battling-gigantic-robots feeling. With Hawken also (probably) coming out this year, MWO is in for some stiff competition!

The sequel to Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light continues the story set by the sadly underrated original and opens up more of post-apocalyptic Russia to explore. What footage we have seen so far is particularly compelling, and looks to maintain the incredible sense of atmosphere from the first game.

Never heard of Monaco? Now you have! Touted as "Hitman Meets Pacman", Monaco is a four-player cooperative indie title which sees you teaming up with three other sprites, all with different abilities, and trying to heist your way through various banks and casinos. It looks amazing, and has received almost universal praise from everybody to go hands-on with it so far. Keep an eye out for it this year!

An RPG in which you play as the greenskins? Sounds good to me, and Of Orcs and Men is keen to deliver on this premise with not one but two protagonists: the burly combat-centric orc, and his smaller, stealthier goblin compatriot. We know little about how the game will play so far, but screenshots and videos have been promising.

Balls-out, over-the-top, tongue-in-cheek action is the order of the day in Overstrike if the announcement trailer is anything to be believed, but 2012 is the year that we find out whether or not Insomniac Games can live up to all these literally explosive promises.

What was previously known as "Planetside NEXT" and is now also known as "the game that killed The Agency", Planetside 2 is set to launch in 2012 on PS3 and PC, touting itself as a high-tech return to the glory days of Planetside's MMOFPS action. Whether or not Sony have changed the formula up enough to make it successful in today's hectic MMO market remains to be seen, but all signs are looking positive.

Tommy from the first Prey makes a return in this sequel, but he isn't the main character anymore. This time around, Prey 2 is led by a U.S. Marshall by the name of Killian Samuels, whose plane crashes into the Sphere seen in the first game. From there it's off to what Human Head Studios are calling "a dark alien noir" with huge open environments and free-form climbing, and certainly the cinematic trailer from E3 this year lends credence to that.

The original Prototype was one of my favourite takes on the open-world genre for a long time, and not least of all because it let you disguise as a grandmother and throw a tank into another tank. Prototype 2 is set to follow in those footsteps, except this time instead of being Alex Mercer, you're hunting him. And you also have a sweet blade arm thing. They should have called this game "Prototype 2: Battle of the Blade Arms". Yes.

From the mind of Kim Swift, one of the creators of Portal, comes a new puzzle game involving strange but excellent mechanics. Quantum Conundrum allows you to move objects around between four different dimensions, including ones that adjust their weight, allow them to ignore gravity, slow down time, and so on. Combining these objects and dimensions allows you to progress through your mad scientists grandfather's creepy mansion! Exciting.

It's time to take to the high seas as Risen 2: Dark Waters gives us a nautical-themed RPG experience that promises to be quite dark and brooding. With the first game actually banned in Australia, there's no word on whether this one will make it through as well but RPG fans everywhere have their fingers crossed.

Haven't ever heard of this game? Neither had I until about a month ago: Scivelation is a Ukranian-developed post-apocalyptic shooter that sees you and a co-op partner fighting against an oppressive regime called... well, the Regime. I'll be the first to admit that I'm primarily interested in this because of the other two fantastic post-apocalyptic shooting franchises to come out of Ukrania's game development scene, and frankly that's enough for me!

2012 should be the year that we finally see Scrolls, the Mojang-developed and Tycho-of-Penny-Arcade-written game which caused so much controversy with Bethesda last year. Billed as part RPG, part turn-based strategy, part collectible-card game, Scrolls has generated a lot of excitement purely on the back of Minecraft's success and its legal troubles. Hopefully the game itself can hold up under the pressure!

The next game in the Silent Hill series is on its way in 2012, and Silent Hill: Downpour has unfortunately become most notable for their bizarre insistence on having their theme song recorded by Korn. Still, the screenshots and video we've seen to date seem suitably atmospheric, so perhaps this won't be such a stumbling block after all.

The second of three installments in Blizzard's seminal RTS series arrives this year, with Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm gearing up for a multiplayer beta test in the next few months. The story shifts to the Zerg in this second part of the game, and we get all new mechanics and all new units to boot. Have a read here for how some of Australia's top competitive players are feeling about the proposed changes.

This one delivers exactly what you see on the tin: the characters of Street Fighter fighting against the characters from Tekken. What more do you need to know? Street Fighter X Tekken also boasts what Capcom are describing as the "signature visual style" that Street Fighter IV launched with, so Tekken fans can see all their favourite characters rendered in new brushwork.

If you haven't played Monday Night Combat yet... don't! Because Super Monday Night Combat is coming out this year, and it'll be free to play, and have even more classes, arenas and mad-as-hell stuff going on. So just wait for that, and get all your third-person DotA-but-with-robots action in one place.

Also popping up as one of my personally most-anticipated titles of the year, The Secret World is an occult-horror MMO from the mind of Ragnar Tornquist, the man behind Dreamfall. With a huge focus on story and a level-less, free-form character development as well as plenty of out-of-game ARG's and required research, it's promising a huge shake-up of what MMO's can and should mean. I'm very excited.

A reboot of the long-running series, the simply-titled Tomb Raider has been described as more of an open-world, survival game than anything to do with raiding any musty old tombs. It's looking great too, with footage from the Microsoft Press Conference at this year's E3 showing a very dark and gritty game that's quite a departure from the previous showings.

With LAN play and no real-money auction house, Torchlight II has become what many of the new-Diablo haters always wanted. But it's got more than just being an alternative to a big name: Torchlight II has a story this time around, plus more classes, more levels and more everything. If they can keep it at the low price point of the original, Runic Games are going to have a very happy 2012.

The Tribes franchise makes a return with Hi-Rez Studios at the helm, the company best known previously for the Global Agenda MMO. Tribes: Ascend harks back to the old classics of the series, with skiing galore and plenty of opportunities to be a massive arsehole to other people. Plus Hi-Rez have actually already got Australian servers up and running, which is a huge plus for anybody looking to score a timely kill.

Another return for an old franchise, and this time it's the old PSX classic Twisted Metal popping back up to say hello. The series' original creators are once again behind the multiple wheels, and there will be continued multiplayer and single player fun times. Read more details right here.

A free-to-play shooter from Crytek? Yes, that's right: Warface is coming in 2012 and it's easily going to be the prettiest F2P game on the market. It's a PVE shooter with a "constantly updated" universe of "dramatic multiplayer co-op missions", which marks a bit of a change from other F2P shooters coming to the market and hopefully one that will make it a winner for the people at Crytek.

CCP's other project, and one that is listed here purely as hopefuly speculation, is the World of Darkness MMO recently announced. We know very little about it other than the title and therefore the setting, but we do know it'll be incredibly hardcore and feature always-on permadeath for characters! Hopefully 2012 will, at least, be the year that we get to see it in action.

Although it appears to be evenly dividing players between "love" and "hate", the recently-announced World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria expansion is doubtless going to make Blizzard and their shareholders a boatload of cash when it launches in 2012, bringing with it playable Pandaren, a new Monk class and a bunch of Oriental-themed delights.

Last but by no means least, the rebooted-into-an-FPS game that is XCOM is also set to launch in 2012 and is causing old-school XCOM fans everywhere to have fits of apoplectic fury. I, for one, think it could be quite promising and certainly looks set to complement the existing universe quite well. Let's all agree to hold our judgments until release. Okay? Okay.

So, did we miss anything? Of course we did! If you've got a game you're hot for in 2012, leave us a note in the comments. Assuming the world doesn't end in December, it's looking like it'll be a great year for gaming everywhere.

SunStar

Dungeons and Dragons: Neverwinter e Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning são outros devo conferir.

King

Eu to curioso só por franquia velha... haha

Quero ver FF13-2, Silent Hill e Twisted Metal. O Beyond Good & Evil 2 me parece legal, devo dar uma olhada já que vai sair pra PC.

Seifer Almasy

Hawken, Max Payne 3 e Overstrike parecem interessantes... sem falar no Diablo 3...

Claudio(Baha) diz:

aloc mei, 3DS tá vendendo q nem água no deserto no japão =O
King diz:
 =O
Claudio(Baha) diz:
 quanto tá aqui no brasiu-siu-siu?
 hã?
King diz:
agora os jogos são pra 3DS
Claudio(Baha) diz:
King diz:
 é, eu vi
ta na faixa dos 700 mangos o original
Claudio(Baha) diz:
E já saiu o Vita no japão.

Uncharted parecidão com o do PS3
King diz:
 e 550 no ML
Claudio(Baha) diz:
King diz:
 opa, falei errado
 600
 no ML
Claudio(Baha) diz:
Claudio(Baha) diz:
 no wii sim
 AAAAAAAhhhhhh
King diz:
pq fazendo isso matou os 2 consoles anteriores
quem tem DSi e DS Lite se fu
 e tem que comprar o 3DS agora
Claudio(Baha) diz:
 assim como o PS2 matou o PS1, DUH
King diz:
mas a nintendo não fazia isso!
Claudio(Baha) diz:
 ????
King diz:
olha quantos DSs teve até agora
Claudio(Baha) diz:
GC não matou N64? Wii não matou GC?
King diz:
 e eram todos compatíveis
estamos falando do DS, não mude o assunto!
Claudio(Baha) diz:
mas eram novas versões do mesm console! Que nem O PS3 Slim comparado ao PS3 tijolão
King diz:
King diz:
o vita vai ter jogos diferentes do PSP?
 lol

Project C.A.R.S
