QuoteSony to start production of PS4 at end of 2011, say Taiwan makers

Sony will have Taiwan-based partners begin production of PlayStation 4 (PS4) featuring body movement-based control like Kinect at the end of 2011 for launch in 2012, according to Taiwan-based component makers.

Foxconn and Pegatron Technology, assemblers of PS3, will undertake assembly of PS4 as well, the sources pointed out. The planned shipment volume of PS4 in 2012 is at least 20 million units, the sources indicated.

QuoteFactories Prepping for 2012 PS4 Launch?

Much earlier than we expect.

According to an often reliable industry source, Digitimes, there are plans afoot to launch a new console in the PlayStation range. The rumour, and we have to stress that this is way too early to receive any kind of confirmation from official sources, hinges on the Taiwanese factories that make components for Sony's consoles.

It seems that these factories (Foxconn and Pegatron) are preparing to swing into production with the expectation of shipping at least 20 million units in 2012. That's far earlier than we expected and many more units than a limited output of developer units would require. That's retail figures. We would assume that, if that's the case, first party developers would already have prototypes in order to begin their launch and early-release development but we haven't heard anything of that nature from any of our own sources just yet.

The report also makes mention of full body motion controls similar to Kinect.

So what do you think? Are you ready for Sony's next console or do you think it's too early and the PlayStation 3 still has a bit of room to grow?

QuoteReport: PS4 Production in 2012 with Kinect-like Motion Controls

With Nintendo's Wii U announcement confirmed for a 2012 release, next-gen conversation has been plentiful. Rumors have been circling regarding both the next-generational Playstation and Xbox. Some rumors have suggested a 2012 production start for both, and now the Playstation half has gained credibility. Only this report suggests a built-in Kinect like motion control sensor.

According to Digitimes, a Foxconn and Pegatron Technology, those whom assembled the Playstation 3, are the supposed assemblers of the Playstation 4 (assuming the numbered system trend will continue). Sources claim that Sony plans to ship a minimum of 20 million units come 2012.

Heavily taking a page from Microsoft's strategy, Sony, according to the source, is expected to incorporate body movement-based control similar to that of Kinect. This, assuming the source's credibility is given insurmountable credence, is a complete disregard for any real future for Sony's Move motion controller. Although, self-contradiction wouldn't be a first for Sony.

Making a carbon copy of Microsoft's Kinect would be quite a leap for Sony. However, Kinect has been hugely successful with over 10 million units sold with no signs of slowing.
